Animal Boogaloos

Can You Dance to the Boogaloo?: Alice V. Lickens (Pavillion Books, 2013)Can You Dance to the Boogaloo?: Alice V. Lickens (Pavillion Books, 2013)

The first double-spread of this book is silhouettes of musical instruments listing the sounds that they make (“The sousaphone goes bhom bhom”), and includes several less well known instruments. This is great for vocabulary building, and playing with lots of sounds. The rest of the story shows various animals dancing and encourages the reader to get their feet moving.

This is not a bedtime story! It’s great to share when you want to get some energy out and the pictures of the animals dancing and playing instruments is great inspiration. The illustrations are full of colour and movement, and might also inspire some art sessions with printing and painting.

If you like dancing to the Boogaloo, then The Animal Boogie will suit you too. Based on a well known song, this is a brightly illustrated book with gorgeous pictures. A huge plus point is inclusivity in the children shown – there are children of different genders and races plus one of the children is shown in a wheelchair.

The version of this song that I know is different though, I know the chorus as “stomp stomp stomp boogie woogie” and in here it’s “stomp stomp boogie woogie oogie”, which just sounds like one syllable too many for me! However if this is your first exposure to the song, or you know this version, it’s very catchy and the whole family will be singing it for ages!
